The Final Fantasy RPG - A Returner Games Production

RULES RESOURCES WORLDBOOKS BOARD WIKI MAILING LISTS IRC FAQ CONTACT

Aside from the boards, the game's developers and players also maintain an active presence on Espernet. For those unfamiliar with IRC, the following section includes a 'quick and dirty' guide towards getting set up with IRC, alongside our IRC code of conduct.

ACTIVE FFRPG CHANNELS
Espernet currently hosts four FFRPG-related channels:

#ffrpg-dev: Our main development channel. Game-related discussion only.
#returners: The FFRPG community channel; general discussion and OOC commentary during official playtests.
#generica: One of two gaming channels. Used to host various campaigns, depending on availability.
#dockingbay: The other of two gaming channels. Used to host various campaigns, depending on availability.

BASIC DIRECTIONS (PC)
For those who have never used mIRC before, these directions should get you into the channel with a minimum of problems.

1. Download mIRC. You can find the newest version of this program at www.mirc.com -- it's a little over one megabyte in size, so it might take a bit of time to download if you're on a slower connection. Install the program, following the on-screen instructions. At the end of the installation process, you'll get the option to launch mIRC.

2. Load up mIRC and close the About mIRC window. You'll see a dialogue box called mIRC Options. Fill out your name, e-mail address and nickname at the bottom, then hit the Add button. Be sure to choose your nickname carefully; common Final Fantasy names like 'Sephiroth' or 'Zidane' will in all likelihood already be taken.

3. Under Description, fill in 'Espernet'. Now you will have a choice of servers. If you are in the United States, under IRC Server, enter either 'chocobo.esper.net', 'dream.esper.net' or 'weyr.esper.net'. If you are in Europe, enter 'damocles.esper.net' or 'excalibur.esper.net'. If you are in Australia, enter 'bean.esper.net'. In all other cases, pick the geographic location closest to you and enter the appropriate information. Leave Ports as it is; the default number should be '6667'. If it isn't, change it. Then hit Add. Alternatively, you can just select 'Espernet (Random server)' from the drop-down list above the Connect to IRC Server button.

4. Click on Connect to IRC server, making sure your server of choice is visible in the drop-down option above. You should connect to Espernet without any problems. A new dialogue box, mIRC Channels Folder, should appear. Hit Add.

5. Under Channel, type '#returners'; under Description, Development Talk. If you are only using mIRC to connect to #returners, check the Auto-join channel on connection option as well. Hit OK, then double-click on the newly-created listing in the Channels Folder to access the channel.

6. Before you start participating in the discussion, check back on the Status window for the following message:

-NickServ- This nickname is registered and protected. If it is your
-
-NickServ- nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password. Otherwise,
-
-NickServ- please choose a different nick.

If this message comes up, your first choice of nickname is already in use. Into the command line at the bottom, type:

/nick [new nickname]

--and hit Enter. [new nickname] should be replaced with whatever nickname you want to change to when entering the command. If the same message comes up again, keep trying until you find a nickname that hasn't been taken yet.

6. Now register your nickname with NickServ to ensure others won't use it. Type:

/msg nickserv register [password]

[password] should be replaced with whatever password you intend to use to verify your nickname. Each subsequent time you log onto mIRC, you can confirm your identity by typing:

/msg nickserve IDENTIFY [password]

7. For courtesy's sake, please identify yourself and your place in the FFRPG when first entering the discussion channel; typing something like 'Joe, current player' or 'Bob, list subscriber' will be enough. This allows us to compile a list of active participants as well as getting a better understanding of what position your opinions are coming from.

Once inside the channel, basic rules of netiquette apply; disruptive behaviour will result in immediate banning from the channel by moderators for the remaining duration of the respective session. More assistance can be found in mIRC's own help files and among the various, more detailed IRC FAQs available on-line.

#ffrpg-dev CODE OF CONDUCT
As with any public place, there are certain rules that must be upheld in order to maintain the peace. #ffrpg-dev is no different. All #ffrpg-dev users are expect to act in a decent manner to encourage friendly discussion, both FFRPG related and otherwise. Failure to do so may result in temporary, or even permament banning. Key things to remember are:

1. Bans & Kicks: #ffrpg-dev administrators have two means of serving discipline to unruly users: kicks and bans. A Kick will boot the offending user from the channel temporarily and is typically used as a warning in case of an offense. Repeated offenses, however, will inevitably result in a Ban from the channel. In most cases, bans are temporary, and are usually lifted within 24 hours. Should a user continue to make problems for the rest of the channel, they will be placed on AKick, and will be permanently barred from joining the channel; this is a measure of last resort, and is not employed lightly.

Should you be banned from the channel, do not attempt to rejoin it under any circumstances until the ban is lifted. This is considered ban evasion, and can result in the ban being extended indefinitely or the user being Akicked outright from the channel. If you feel you have been unjustly banned from the channel, /msg one of the operators and explain the situation to them.

2. Channel Hopping and Spamming: 'Channel hopping' is the act of entering a channel and leaving again without saying anything. What differentiates it from lurking is the time period involved; channel hoppers will spend less than a minute in a channel before leaving again. Be aware that the operators frown on this, and will issue bans for such behaviour. 'Spammers' are defined as users who join the channel with the sole purpose of advertising a given sites or posting links to schemes such as Outwar. Any user spamming #ffrpg-dev will be instantly banned from the channel, and recommended to the espernet IRCOps for K-lining.

3. Color Text: Heavy use of color text, especially that of yellow (#8) or light green (#9), is not tolerated. Continued use may result in kicking or banning.

4. Flaming: While animosity between users is inevitable, the operators request that you keep personal disagreements out of the channel for the sake of all other users. Continued flaming may result in kicking or temporary banning.

5. Flooding: Intentionally 'flooding' the channel with large quantities of text will result in your being kicked by the server; in cases where flooding is anything other than accidental, it will result in immediate banning from the channel. Attempting to persistently disrupt rules discussion with off-topic comments may also be grounds for banning.

#returners CODE OF CONDUCT
As a channel of the FFRPG community as a whole, #returners operates under a looser set of standards than #ffrpg-dev, enforcement of which is largely up to the individual moderators. While many of the same principles apply, the following should also be remembered:

1. Bans & Kicks: Kicks are a fact of #returners life, and may not always be handed out for rules infractions. Bans, however, will usually be made as a result of activities which disrupt channel operations. Again, ban evasion should be avoided at all costs.

2. Discussion: #returners is generally open to all topics of discussion, though polarising topics like politics and religion should be left by the wayside if at all possible. Attempts to carry out such discussion against the will of the moderators or the rest of the channel may be grounds for kicking.

HIGHWIND
Highwind is the #returners channel's official GM aid, and is maintained by dark_rabite and Drifter. Highwind may be made available to other channels on request, and currently supports the following functions:

Dice Module: Highwind functions as a full-fledged die roller.

# The argument syntax is as follows: [#][[[+/-][count]/]dice]d[w<+/->][r][<+/->][,%]
# * Breakdown:
# rolls = Roll all the dice x amount of times.
# [+]count = Count only the x HIGHEST dice (default if neither + or - is prefixed).
# -count = Count only the x LOWEST dice.
# dice = Use x many dice and add them together.
# [d]sides = Use dice with x many sides.
# <+/->weight = Use weighted dice:
# * A value of +2 is the default if only the + sign is given.
# * A value of -2 is the default if only the - sign is given.
# * A value of +1 is the default if no value at all is given.
# * A value of 0 is not valid.
# * A weight of 1 (+1 or -1) will not affect the results.
# * A positve weight will skew the results to higher rolls.
# * A negative weight will skew the results to lower rolls.
# * The greater the magnitude, the more the results are skewed.
# reroll = Reroll whenever x or lower is rolled.
# Note: reroll has precedence over the [+/-]count operator.
# <+/->modifer = Add or subtract x to whatever is rolled.
#
# * Examples:
#
# d20 = Roll 1 20-sided die.
# 6#4d6 = Roll 6 sets of 4 6-sided dice.
# 6#3/4d6 = Roll 6 sets of 4 6-sided dice, counting only the highest 3 of the 4 rolls.
# -3/4d6 = Roll 4 6-sided dice, counting only the lowest 3 of the 4 rolls.
# 6#4d6r1 = Roll 6 sets of 4 6-sided dice, rerolling any 1's.
# 2d12+1 = Roll 2 12-sided dice and add 1 to the result.
# 4d6w- = Roll 4 6-sided dice that are weighted to roll low numbers.

Seen Module: Highwind keeps track of all users entering and exiting the channel. By using the command '!seen [username]', users can track the exact time and date a specific channel denizen last came into #returners.

Quote Database: Highwind maintains an updated quote database for the #returners channel . All quote functions are also available in /query; please do not spam the main channel with quote requests.

# !quote = Select a random quote from the database.
# !lastquote = Select last quote entered into the database.
# !quote [quote number] = Select a specific quote from the database.
# !addquote [text] = Add a quote to the database.
# !findquote [text] = Search for a specific keyword within the quote database.
# !getquotes = Receive the complete quote storage file in one .txt document.
# !delquote [quote number] = Remove a quote from the database..
